Walking on Water, Ricardo Cobo
02/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the few classical players who dares experiment with new music, Cobo has done it again with this breathtaking disc. As usual, Cobo's dazzling technique, surely one of the most polished in guitar (if not THE most awe-inspiring among the players today), is on display. But what really counts here is the range of material, from the whimsical Walking on the Water to tour de forces like Eduardo Sainz de la Maza's Homenaje a Toulouse-Lautrec. It isn't easy to convincingly carry out repertorie that is seldom heard and is often challenging to the ear. But Cobo has managed to turn every composition here into a thing of sheer beauty."
An enchanting collection

"Ricardo Cobo's new CD Walking on the Water is a fascinating and eclectic recording of guitar music. Beginning with the alluring and poignant Homage a Villa Lobos by Roland Dyens, guitarist Ricardo Cobo takes his listeners on an artistically and technically impressive journey through guitar compositions by six 20th century composers. This CD will inspire people drawn to music that goes beyond the standard guitar repertoire. The casual guitar aficionado may find some selections challenging. However, since all of the pieces carry captivating melodic lines which overlie the structural, rhythmical lines, even traditionalists will find themselves enchanted by this collection of pieces. From the delicate rivulets in Larry Cooperman's Walking on the Water to the slapping rhythms and the forceful motion in pieces such as Elegia por la Muerte de un Tanguero, Maximo Diego Pujol's homage to Astor Piazzola, this collection of music extends the range of what one typically hears from the guitar. As I listen to this CD, I sometimes convince myself that one piece in particular is my favorite, then moments later I find another piece equally compelling. Fans of Cobo's Tales for Guitar will be pleased with the artistic merit of this new CD, as Cobo again goes beyond technical genius into sensitively capturing shades of sound rarely heard except in live concerts."
Outstanding CD

"This is my favorite CD of my collection. Ricardo Cobo leads this new generation of young guitarists (including me) into new boundaries of technique and repetiore. This album sets a new standard among classical guitarists. His experimentation with new jazzy style repetiore gives the guitar a new flavor. I think that people are just tired of hearing the same old spanish favorites over and over again. This is the classical guitar MILLENIUM STYLE."
