"Santa Monica

This CD by Ric Seaberg is a treat. I discover an artist who is completely new to me and I wonder how come I haven't heard his music before. Where have I been?

There is the somewhat off-putting caveat for the on-line listing that I read: "Explicit Lyrics." But there is really nothing offensive about the words. They are clever. At times they are sad. And yes, they are edgy. But they are at times gentle and inspiring.

Not being an expert, I couldn't characterize the genre of this music. It seems, like lots of good music, to ride a wave over several different types. Sometimes the music seems much too "hip" for the day-to-day lyrics. Can it be so groovy to take out the garbage? (I don't know what the current adverb for "groovy" is, so don't yell at me.)

About "The Bichon Song:" we have one of these special little white dogs, so I was wandering around the house singing, "We need a BEE-shawn free-ZAY on the motorway," and my husband lifted an eyebrow and said, "Oh, that'll top the charts for sure." Fortunately Seaberg sings it a lot better than I do.

When I was growing up, my father used to say, "Turn that music down!" But in our day stereo was state of the art. Today we have multi-track decibel heaven, so I am not a connoisseur of this engagingly twangy high-tech guitar (we were strictly unplugged), but I hear it as sassy and a tour de force.

I like it.
