CD Reviews

A Dream Come True
F.N. Wright | Philadelphia, PA United States | 11/13/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After being transported to a new dimension upon discovering "Showcase" with Tikiman, I started on a quest to cop as much R&S as I could. After having spent goodly $$ buying the vinyl singles from Germany (shipping costs more than the item!) I am ecstatic to see this work domestically released on CD at a regular price. Coupled with its companion piece "The Versions" this is absolute heaven. I didn't think Tikiman's contributions ("Jah Rules" is divine) could be matched, let alone surpassed, but Cornel Campbell does just that with his absolutely transcendent and inspirational "King In My Empire." "Making History" by the Chosen Brothers is right there as well, with a gorgeous melody delivered on a floating river of sound and easy groove. All the cuts on this disc are winners, but these are my favs. "Troddin" by Shalom also deserves mention.
Basically this is a collection of singles released in Europe on vinyl from '98(?) thru '02. The original singles paired the song with the version on the b-side but for the CDs they've put the versions on a separate disc.
Put both of these discs in your player (on shuffle if you can so you get the version right after the song) and melt away into another reality -- let the rhythm and sound wash over you and transport you to the hills, oceans or wherever else you really wish you were.
One more thing: Rhythm & Sound releases have a way of disappearing suddenly. If you don't wanna get stuck having to seek out these cuts overseas and wind up paying much more, cop this and "The Versions" now. Get while the gettin's good. And this stuff is good gettin'."
Astounding CD, timeless beauty

"To whoever is reading the reviews above, please note that the 'Amazon Copywriter' complaining about the hiss may have totally missed the mark with this review. He hasn't figured out that these guys use hiss as part of their musical compositions. (just as Pan-Sonic use clicks, La Monte Young uses motors, etc..)

Yes, although this seems far-fetched, first known for their Techno productions as the legendary 'Basic Channel' team, the Rhythm&Sound crew are some of the most dedicated audiophiles you would ever meet, fanatical about every sonic detail in their music, and keenly aware of every single nuance that they drop. This CD is a masterpiece of futuristic reggae/electronic music, and sadly, it may fall upon many deaf ears that should have probably stayed within the safe confines of an Oakenburger trancey compilation, or more put-me-to-sleep exquisite Deep House.(BUT with no hiss).

Every song on this collection is a profound aesthetic statement, which is sure to regal the initiated ears for many years to come. Check the companion CD with the 'Versions' of the same songs. Both are essential 'Desert-Island-Disc' caliber material. Truly bound to become legendary. There are so few genuine and original creators out there who deserve recognition and yet eschew the public's eye. This is CD is from one of them, unseen giants of modern electronic music.

Disclaimer: I am not associated in any way with Rhythm&Sound, just a lifetime fan."
