CD Reviews

Another great record from A. Sparhawk
Joseph P. Helm III | Washington, DC | 04/25/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Produced by Mark Kozelek, the record has a similar sound to Sun Kil Moon offerings, but with a more claustrophobic, close-miked staging that gives it an air of disciplined restraint even though it's rife with heavy/distorted motifs (both sonic and lyrical). The songs are thematically similar to Drums and Guns, with the arrangements being more straight-ahead indie rock power trio--excellent, colorful drumming and Alan Sparhawk's richly textured guitar figures taking center stage. Sparhawk is a master of tension/release without resorting to the old soft/loud/soft Pixies/emo formula. Fans of Low will definitely dig this. The record is very consistent, but highlights include "Kids" and a rendition of Low's "Breaker.""
Great band, great album.
Z. Thompson | St. Paul, MN USA | 07/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Alan Sparhawk hits another one out of the park. This project of Alan's allows him to let loose, turn up the guitar, add tons of distortion, and just plain rock out. This is a very strong debut album, with lots of catchy songs. But nothing can beat RGC in concert...they play the 2 minute songs from this album, but then add in some lengthy psychedelic guitar solos and jams. Don't miss them if they come to your town!"
Sparkhawk amps up

"I've been a fan of Alan's for years and years now. I've got almost all of Low's catalog and have even picked up Sparkhawk's Silber Solo Guitar release. This CD is pretty pleasing. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it delivers. It's very short, so don't expect it to engross you for too long, but it's a nice little burst of rock and Sparhawk did a good job of tuning into a new vibe. I dig it."
