CD Reviews

Great dance mixes of They Say Vision
K. Eisenberger | Defiance, Ohio United States | 08/15/2002

"This song recently hit number one on the club charts and was finally released on cd by MCA but it did't cross to the Top 100 chart. This is Res' second single("Golden Boys" her first)and showcases both a great new talent and the remixers. She has been compared to Chrissie Hynde vocally--not really sure about that one but hopefully she can have her long career. The remixes are: Robbie Rivera's Vocal Mix Part Two(6:53)which is my favorite mix because it keeps the sloping jazzy feel of the original in the dance mix. Second mix is the DJ Guiseppe Mix (8:13) that is a bit pop/house but still underground feel to it.Then you get the Bastone & Burnz Remix(8:59) that is what most DJ's play--very aggessive and loopy keys add to the drama of this mix.Excellent.Then you get a ... mix by DJ Encore(5:52)-I don't like it very much. The final track is the Robbie Rivera dub mix(8:06) that is quite good for a dub mix. Buy it for the first 3 mixes because you can't lose with any one of them."
Never mind what They-Say, I-say it's good!

"Tracklisting: 1 >Robbie Rivera's Vocal Mix Part Two -6:53/ 2 >DJ Guiseppe D Remix -8:14/ 3 >Bastone & Burnz Remix -9:00/ 4 >DJ Encore Remix -5:52/ 5 >Robbie Rivera's Peak Tribal Session Dub -8:07.An absolutely massive club hit in the US and rightly so, MCA got it right with these excellent remixes for upcoming talent Res. She has crafted a truly beautiful song here that, if it can't be a huge commercial hit, deserves smarter, underground attention. The Robbie Rivera Vocal Mix 2 is the highlight here, though the other mixes are all very fine. Rivera keeps it simple, short and very sweet with dreamy, deep house beats and a repeated piano sample, pushing the glorious vocals to the fore. Unfortunately his "Peak Hour Tribal Session Dub" fails to deliver in the same way: it might be good for late-nite dance floors but it's just too monotonous for home listening. DJ Guiseppe goes peak-time NY with a driving, tribal-esque journey and enough stops and starts to fire up the boys on a Saturday night. If the Guiseppe remix doesn't get the blood pumping, then the fabulous NINE minute Bastone & Burnz remix is guaranteed to get you hot. A full on hi-nrg mix that sets the vocals on top of pumping Euro beats and rising, trance-like touches; get your hands in the air! DJ du jour DJ Encore offers up a fine remix that cross-blends deep house and moody trance but at 122bpm is just too slow to hit hard. If the aim of the remixes was to market Res to punters that normally wouldn't hear her, then they worked well; Res is getting heard and I am buying the album to hear more. Meanwhile ... here in the UK, the equally brilliant "Golden Boys" is the chosen single but the remixes are dreadful. Maybe, on the success of "They-say", MCA will re-do it for the US."
