CD Reviews

Worth Every Penny
Donald Beale | 05/19/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"One of the great horn players of the twenties and thirties, Red Nichols helped popularize the Dixieland sound and contributed to the development of swing. Many of the great bandleaders who came along later had cut their teeth in Red's band--Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, and Jimmy Dorsey among them. This collection comprises recordings from 1949, a fine group of standards that show Red in top form. Die-hard Nichols fans (however many there may be out there) might prefer his earlier recordings, but this anthology will make a fine addition to the typical well-rounded collection."

"For anyone who likes dixieland, this is the album for you. Red Nichols and the Five Pennies provide a historical perspective and the recording quality is good enough that it is not a distraction, unlike music recorded in the 20's or 30's. For anyone interested in the sheer joy that music can be, please consider this album. It's a gem."
