CD Reviews

Great music, nice packaging, horrible sound quality
Yosuke Kitazawa | Berkeley, CA USA | 02/25/2007

"The music here is great. But unfortunately this label thought it would be fine to master the albums from horribly scratchy vinyl, probably played back on a portable turntable and recorded with a microphone set up across the room. All loud passages are distorted, and cracks, pops and scratches are heard throughout. I love vinyl and don't mind cracks and pops, but not on a commercially released CD.

These albums admittedly are not hi-fi recordings. But I can tell when something does not sound the way they should.

The Red Krayola release HURRICANE FIGHTER PLANE on Atom Records includes the same albums on 2 separate CDs, supposedly in much greater sound quality (and not sourced from vinyl). I will return this and buy that instead.

EDIT: The aforementioned HURRICANE FIGHTER PLANE is even worse than this release - the sound quality is a bit better (no vinyl crackles), but the track order is completely messed up, with each track fading out when they should lead in to one another, among many other problems.

Please see my review for that product:

"Brilliant imaginative psychedelia very much the invention of Mayo Thompson and others. I didn't expect the sound quality to be incredible so it is fine. I can hear the playing well."
