Red with Ray...mixed results...

"I love the Red Garland Trio 0f the '50s and early '60s. This was recorded in '58. The problem is...Ray Barretto is superfluous. It probably seemed like a cool idea to team a great conga player with a great groove trio, but the results are mixed. "Blues In Mambo" works well enough, but, really, Ray is only trying to stay out of Art Taylor's way, as Art is capable of handling all of what is necessary. "East Of The Sun" is another example. Great tune, but what does Ray add? Maybe I'm just a trio man, plain and simple - a Red Garland trio man."
