Synopsis

Album Description
2008 release containing two early '70s albums from the Rock keyboardist on one CD. Considering John 'Rabbit' Bundrick's reputation and high profile career, playing keyboards with everyone from Free and Bob Marley right up to The Who, it's amazing that his solo work still remains largely unrecognized. After Free split in early 1973, Rabbit continued his association with Island Records and, as well as recording innumerable sessions for them, made two excellent solo albums. Broken Arrows from 1973, and Dark Saloon from 1974, were Rabbit putting his songwriting talents to good use. ('Salt Annie Ginger Tree' was later covered by Johnny Nash.) On Dark Saloon Rabbit was joined by string arranger Marty Ford, ABBA's Swedish musicians and his Texas friends Terry Wilson and Tony Braunagel along with repeat appearances from Snuffy Walden and Al Roberts from Stray Dog (also on Broken Arrows) and even Free's Tetsu turns up to play some bass. Ork Records.

Amazon song listing incorrect
Jim Z | 11/18/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Don't know for what album the song listing in Amazon is for , but it is not for "Dark Saloon / Broken Arrows"....oh well.

As a classic rock fan now approaching his fifth decade , I was intrigued by this release. Being very familiar and appreciative of Rabbit's work with Paul Kossoff among others , I wanted to explore this release , having never heard either. The label has released tons of quality stuff over the years , so I was comfortable with my purchase.

At first , I couldn't figure out the sequencing. The 2nd album released (Dark Saloon) is actually presented prior to the 1st album released (Broken Arrows). Being a chronological kind of guy , I listened to the last ten tracks first , and then the first ten. This way , I was able to hear the albums as they were originally released.

What a difference ! The "Broken Arrows" album is much more ballad oriented than "Dark Saloon". Both releases have their significant high points , as well as some not-stellar moments. But they are like two completely listening experiences.

Upon my second listen , I programmed my player to play a cross-section from both albums , thereby giving a more pleasurable listening hour (64:07).

I was not disappointed in the least from this release. If you are a fan of early 70's rock , you will enjoy this disc. A great value for your musical dollar."
