Rubinstein's Best Symphony

"I remember seeing a ca. 1890 ad for "Symphony Cigars" that had a unnamed portrait of a man I recognized as Anton Rubinstein. Apparenty in 1890 Rubinstein was so well know as a writer of symphonies that no name on the ad was needed. A sorry state that his music is all but ignored today. Unlike his more robust Ocean or Dramatic symphonies, or his piano concertos, or his fame as a force of nature at the piano, this symphony, while still having it's share of memorable melodies, is more sweetly gentle and lyrical. To listen to this beautiful symphony it's hard to understand the contempt Rubinstein was held in by his Russian nationalistic composer contemporaries."
