Red-Blooded, and no holds barred!

"I really wanted some kind of introduction to Mussorgsky's best on one CD, and this release here has more than met my needs. You just can't lose with a rock solid conductor like Ormandy on the podium. There's no self-conscious, post-modern restraint in these interpretations, and the selections are very generous too. Night on Bald Mountain is every bit as hell-fired and rousing as it should be, while Pictures glows with humor, variety, and panache. There is no doubt in my mind that Mussorgsky was a wild man, and Ormandy captures the breakneck danger of his music perfectly. There are some nice fillers too. I had heard the Prelude to Khovanshchina and the dances from Borodin's Prince Igor somewhere before, but I never knew what it was I was hearing. I'm glad I have them now, and you'll be too."
