Synopsis

From the start of their recording career, Athens, Georgia's finest have been a fertile source of cover tunes, non-album B-sides and alternate versions. This limited-edition collection compiles a baker's dozen of rarities and oddities, including the band's readings of Pylon's "Crazy," Aerosmith's "Toys in the Attic," the Floyd Cramer instrumental "Last Date," and the gospel number "Tired of Singing Trouble," plus a variety of alternate mixes and live versions. Rounding out the set are a pair of ramshackle acoustic numbers from the soundtrack of the documentary Athens GA, Inside Out, "Swan Swan H" and the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." Although a couple of tracks overlap the band's 1987 rarities package Dead Letter Office, In the Attic is a handy adjunct to R.E.M.'s album catalog. --Scott Schinder

"The sign of a great band is the quality of the stuff that doesn't make the regular albums, and by that standard, R.E.M. is a damn fine band. Dead Letter Office, released in 1987, collected their B-sides and leftovers from Chronic Town (inclusive) to Lifes Rich Pageant. And this collection of rare and live tracks that fell through the cracks picks up from there and goes to the end of their tenure with IRS. The acoustic trilogy of The One I Love, Maps & Legends and Disturbance at the Heron House, recorded at an LA guitar shop is a definite highlight of their vinyl B-sides, and to have them together on CD is a wish fulfilled, as is the So.Central Rain/Red Rain/Time After Time triptych. So if you're a fan you should definitely get this one before it goes out of print."
An excellent addition to your REM collection...

"It's always nice to hear the old favorites performed in different ways. For me, the album was well worth its price simply for the cover version of Dream. The way the band harmonizes on that simple song is incredible."
