CD Reviews

Still had room to grow as a band

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'm a huge Queensryche fan and have been since I first heard Rage For Order as a teenager. As much as I like this album, I've always thought of it as an also-ran compared to their next few releases. The music is more dated, and the songs not as consistent. It's still great stuff, but failed to meet its mark as well as future efforts. With the exception of Tate's voice, they really don't sound all that different from other bands of the time - they were playing the same game as everyone else. I don't think they had yet figured out how they wanted to be different from the competition. They worked a little too hard to sound like their peers, and as a result some of the album sounds a bit cliche.

As critical as I sound, I DID still give it 4 well-deserved stars. The themes are interesting, most of the lyrics worth reading. The songs are at least as good as the competition of the time. But it wasn't until their next album, Rage, that they truly found the courage to do what no one else was doing.

I know lots of people won't agree with what I just said, but it's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it."
