Synopsis

Product Description
From a background working in left-wing English fringe theatre groups, Punishment Of Luxury were a four-man post-punk band formed in December 1976 in the north-east of England, and released a single, Puppet Life on the Small Wonder label in June 1978. In 1979 they signed to United Artists and released the single Jellyfish/Engine Of Excess and the album Laughing Academy . 1980 saw the release of the single Secrets/Brain Bomb . All received critical acclaim and sold well. An extensive European tour followed and United Artists sent the band into the studio to record another album, a concept album to be called Gigantic Days . This, the album they recorded for Red Rhino is released now with bonus material, extensive notes and deluxe artwork.

CD Reviews

Funghi, I am just a funghi.....

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I love Punishment of Luxury, one of the lesser-known (in the US anyway, it seems) bands to come out of the punk/post punk 70's in the UK. Their first album, "The Laughing Academy", is excellent (and I have the CD, ha ha). However, due to circumstances, record company treachery, and such, most of the rest of their output has seemingly been unavailable in any form other than the two releases by Overground Records, which are a lot of demos and undermixed tracks, although still listenable, but not of the best quality.

"7" is something I used to have on vinyl, and it's not a full-length album, it's an EP. This Lemon Records release is a re-release of the Red Rhino EP, and the mix sounds great. However, the Amazon track information is totally wrong. There is one bonus track on here, "Hold Me Never Mould Me" and the total number of tracks numbers 6.

"Funghi" has always been one of my favorite Punilux songs, and "Revelations" is guaranteed to make you realize you're over the speed limit if listening while driving.

If you're a fan, this is definitely worth having, but sadly, their very best work, "Laughing Academy" is pretty hard to come by. 4 out of 5 stars."
