Synopsis

Album Description
An empty space that holds whatever you want.... Over eighteen months in the making, ALTARA combines qualities of the work of both Griffin and A Produce, while pushing out into territory previously unfamiliar to both. The collaboration was entirely a "virtual" one, as the artists have still never met face to face. In lieu of the more conventional in-studio collaboration, a two-way exchange was made through the mail of digital audio tapes containing atmospheres, sound effects, or even partially completed tracks. Most of these pieces bounced back and forth so many times that their origins were lost in the layering, re-editing, and re-compositing process, and neither artist can be exactly certain which elements are their own. ALTARA is a collection of five open and spacious, slow-evolving pieces, varying between rich drones, and evocative textural loops. The final piece, the 36-minute epic "You Send Me the Message," is a deep, evolving collage of multiple layers. Together, these tracks comprise a 65 minute visit to an open, empty space of contemplation, vision and wonder.

CD Reviews

AN AMBIENT COLLABORATION
Steven H. Propp | Sacramento, CA USA | 11/05/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Mike ("M") Griffin is the founder of Hypnos records, as well as one-half of the electronic duo Viridian Sun (e.g., Perihelion, Solar Noise). He describes himself as "a visual artist and writer who inexplicably came under the spell of the notion he should record the noises he makes with electronic instruments and tape machines."

For this album, Griffin teamed up with LA-centered Trance composer/artist "A Produce" (Barry Craig) to produce this album over an 18-month period and release it in 1999. (Both had gone several years without releasing a full-length album.) Interestingly, neither artist met each other face-to-face during the recording process.

The album begins with four shorter pieces, and concludes with a 36-minute track, "You Send Me the Message." The album is ambient, minimalist, droning, slowly-evolving, spacious, and excellent.
