CD ReviewsAOR Gem Worth Another Look Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 04/26/2006 (4 out of 5 stars) "Shadows was the 1989 debut album from Private Life, an AOR band featuring former members of Rod Stewart, Axis, and Badfinger with singer Kelly Breznik. Private Life's music was very slick, keyboard-based AOR sounding like a cross between late-80's Heart (musically) and Vixen (vocally). The album features 9 ready-for-radio songs followed by a very serene (and unexpected) cover of Amazing Grace.
Shadows is a very enjoyable album if you're into this kind of music, which I most definitely am. Despite catching the attention of Eddie Van Halen, who produced the album and took the band on tour with Van Halen, Private Life never really caught on. They released one more album before fading away. Private Life was very much a product of its time. You just don't hear this kind of music anymore, which I suppose could be called progress. If you're an AOR fan, an album like this will make you miss the good old days though. Shadows had been out of print for a while, and wasn't easy to track down. The good news is that the Wounded Bird label just reissued the album along with the band's self-titled release on a single CD, which is also available on Amazon. " |
