CD Reviews

The One

"I really think people slept on this album. It's hard for me to review Prince because I always end up comparing to an earlier album, the "old" Prince...usually I compare everything to Sign of the Times since it's my favorite by him. I guess it's unfair to put everything to that standard.

Anyway, this CD is decent. I'm a huge Prince fan, I own most stuff by him(I can't say "everything" since who knows how much is TRULY out there??). Around the time that this CD was released, the single Come On was out and he had performed on the Jay Leno show. I LOVED that performance. Very funky! And it was funny because later on in the show, Jay was clapping (off-beat) to the music and they show Prince trying to help him get on beat. Hilarious!

Okay okay...so there are some pretty good songs on this CD. I can't give it higher stars because I can't say that all (or most) of the songs are outstanding. A couple are REALLY good. The rest are just okay.

Fave tracks:

*The ONE - LOVE it! This of course was for Mayte, his wife at the time. I think he came really close to achieving that feeling we all get when we hear "Adore". I know, I know, he'll probably NEVER write a ballad that can top Adore, but this one is high up there. Oooh especially the bassline.

*Come On - Love the guitar in this one...it's funky

*Push it up - This one grew on me, and I think it's funky.

*Mad Sex

*Shoo Be Doo

Honorable Mention - New Power Soul - title track; it grew on me and I think it's a good start for the album. This is one of those James Brown horns type jams.

Oh yes! And be patient because there is a hidden track. It's track 49. After track 11 ends, tracks 12-48 are blank, 5 secs in length each, until you get to track 49. The song is called "Wasted Kisses" and it's a cool litle hidden groove. Pay attention to the sounds in the background...flatline.

Happy listening!

Not Bad

"New Power Soul is an easy Prince album to overlook, because it's credited to the New Power Generation. After listening, though, it becomes obvious that it's really more about Prince than a democratic band effort. As another customer review states, New Power Soul does not really hold up in a side-by-side comparison with Prince's best albums, whether you tend to go more for his Sign o' the Times style material or his so-called "Love Symbol Album" style material, or mega-collections such as The Gold Experience. The short silent tracks seem too much like a gimmick, but at least New Power Soul is not an album in which the entire set is presented as one mammoth track. So, if you're looking to buy five Prince albums in order to start a collection of his most representative and highest quality work, put off buying New Power Soul. If you're a Prince fan that's looking to round out a collection and somehow missed this the first time around, see if there's one of the Amazon vendors that has it for a good price, and go for it."

"I nearly wore my CD out, several years ago. "Mad Sex" is swingin', and this album makes you want to sing along (as if anyone could sing as well as Prince). "Until U're in My Arms Again" is a ballad; beautiful tune. "When You Love Somebody" is hip, and sticks in your head. This album creates a fun, frivolous mood. I own nearly all of Prince's albums, and I plan to own them all. I am genuinely surprised that this one has not been reviewed, yet. I will take time to review my collection, soon.

"New Power Soul" is a lively CD that may have you dancing around or tapping rhythms on household items or the dashboard. If you dig this one, step it up with The Gold Experience; "P control" is worth gold. ;-)
