The Best Album Porter Has Ever Done....Deserves 20 Stars
Robert L. Henry Jr. | Paden City, WV United States | 09/09/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This album by this Country Legend is a rock solid effort. I believe it is the best album has ever done. Most of the songs on this album have been done by Porter before, either by himself or with Dolly but these versions have new life, they sound fresh and Porter sings the songs with unlimited energy. Porter and many of the other singers of yesterday have been pushed aside by radio, who refuse to play their records but Porter is pure Country, the way Country should be, and the material on this album is the best country you'll hear and by far the best album ever released by a 70 something year old. Porter should get a big thanks for returning Country back to its old form, Country needed it and 30+ year olds to 90+ years olds needed it. People are tired of hearing people that act country or try to sound Country. Porter was and is and has always been country and for the older folks out there this will be the best album you'll ever hear"
Vital new LP from Nashville legend

"Wagoner's second album for Shell Point finds him in fine voice, with supple support from his regular band, The Wagonmasters, and a finely picked collection of tunes. The album title is one to take with a grain of salt, as Wagoner's never been hugely "plugged" in the first place. Still, the electric guitars give way to steel, dobro and acoustic picking, and the drums keep to a polite level. The result would sound as natural in 1962 as it does here in 2002.The near-acoustic backing provides ample room for the exceptionally warm vocal harmonies, sung without the strain of topping an electric band. The 72-year-old Wagoner's voice retains its gospel-tinged honky-tonk energy and blends beautifully with his background singers. A pair of duets with Willie Nelson include the classic "Family Bible" and an update of "When the Silver Eagle Meets the Great Speckled Bird."Wagoner contributes two new tunes: the philosophical "Silence in the Wind" and the redemptive "After All." He selects classics from the catalogs of Bill Monroe ("Blue Velvet Band") and the Osborne Brothers ("I Cried Again"), as well as reprising Dolly Parton's "Lost Forever in Your Kiss." The latter effectively replaces Parton's duet vocal with sotto voce recitation. For all the glitter of Wagoner's stage suits and showmanship as an Opry host, his music remains down-home and true to the roots of his musical experience. This no mere rehash of past glories, this is vital, new music from an artist who continues to sparkle with inner electricity."
Porter's still going strong!

"God bless Porter Wagoner. He hasn't changed his basic hillbilly orientation in over 45 years in the upper ranks of the country music pantheon, and it looks like he never will. This simple, unpretentious collection of songs sounds just like his old stuff from the early '70s, calculated but heartfelt, corny but cool. As the title implies, the arrangements are pretty down to earth, but really not that much different than any of his classic work. Porter's getting on in years, but still has a great voice, not nearly as creaky or fragile as any number of his contemporaries. The guy's still got it, and this album ranks right up there with anything he's ever done. By the way, Willie Nelson guests on a couple of tunes, and these two veterans sound pretty simpatico. Worth checking out!"
