CD Reviews

Act One, Sing Too/ Polly Bergen

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Polly Bergen recorded this album in 1963 for the Philips label. It would be her last LP after which she devoted her career almost exclusively to acting. The album cover was even a publicity photo of her posing on the set of the motion picture that she was filming at the time, "The Caretakers." She looked absolutely lovely. The songs selected were all standards popularized in movies of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Jerry Fielding conducted the sessions. His smoothe and easy arrangements never overwhelm the singer. They perfectly complement Miss Bergen's slightly husky, but swet voice.I love this album so much, it's hard to pick favorites. Still, her tender rendition of "Hi Lili Hi Lo" is just exquisite. And "Easy to Love" lingers in my mind long after the record has ended. How many times have you heard "As Time Goes By?" After hearing Polly's heartfelt version, you will feel as if it were the first. "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" makes me imagine that I'm sitting in an intimate supper club. On "Bye Bye Baby" she demonstrates once again that she can belt as well as croon.Polly Bergen has blessed us with six LPs in her career as a singer. I cherish them all, and it thrills me that one more has been reissued on CD.It should be noted, however, that although the album was originally recorded in mono and stereo, this particular reissue is mono. I would have preferred the stereo.Nevertheless, the sound quality is superb. The performance is first rate. And you won't be disappointed. A must for your collection."

"Polly Bergen is one of the most underrated of singers. In this album she proves as much.I love the feeling, emotion she puts in every song like it was written specifically with her in mind, When Bergen sings one can hear the lyrics unlike some singers I've listened to. Anyone who loves good music, done the right way, will enjoy this CD. Also provides a good selection of songs. Only negative is that the CD is not in stereo, but the sound is real clear.I wish Bergen would have recorded more music."
