Synopsis

Album Description
"St. John continues to eschew the `standard' repertoire for her more creative whims, [her] brilliant Four Seasons pairing being a fine example." All About Jazz A renowned violin soloist, the Met's contrabassonist, an Israeli rhythm section, & the world's most famous didgeridoo player present a virtuosic exploration of polka music! This diverse group met in a New Jersey studio to record a polka album just for fun, and an idea that began as a joke quickly grew into an eccentric, virtuosic, and energetic exploration of folk, country, classical, and jazz. From the American Midwest to the mountains of Bohemia, Apolkalypse Now is the only album of 2009 that poses the question: "Would you like sauerkraut with that?" Lara St. John's latest recording with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and conductor Eduardo Marturet.

CD Reviews

Who knew Polka could be so much fun!

"I haven't listened to polka since I was 6 and my parents took me to see the Stratton Mountain Boys at Oktoberfest. Incidentally, I won the contest where you blow the big horns that year, too. So anyway, never thought polka was my thing. Filed it in the drawer marked "potentially cool, but I couldn't pull it off."

Man, how wrong I was. This album is so much fun! Not only does it feature great musicians, who are obviously having a fantastic time, but the songs themselves are great! It's quite a trip. Lots of different styles, lots of tapping your feet, lots of fun. I particularly like the Victoria Commonwealth Polka and Ludwig van Polka."
Polkatastic!

"I'll admit, this isn't my usual fare, but intrigued by the title, I gave it a listen.

I've always associated polkas with the film "Good Morning Vietnam", where they provided the dull flip side to Adrian Cronauer's rock and roll antics. Not so here, where a napalm filled bassoon and machine gun horns are going to blow you away!

2 or 3 tracks in, you might be thinking "hey, I've got this polka thing down", and you start to wonder how you'll make it through the other 17. But then "BAM", they lay out another stunning variation on the polka theme. Sometimes its bassoon based polka. Followed by polka for horns. And then maybe a polka with lots of strings in it. Pretty sure some of the tracks combine all three if you listen carefully.

Seriously though, this album is fun to listen to, a musical journey trailblazed by a happy band of polka adventurers. Thanks for improving my polka face guys!"
