For the classical generalist.

"If you are looking to stock your classical musical shelves with a broad range of recognizable pieces, then this disc is for you. Otherwise, this album is not that great. Essentially it consists of the overplayed classical standards that happen to be Polish. If you are looking for a better introduction to modern Polish classical then try "The Varsovia Quartet play string quartets from Poland" (OLYMPIA OCD 328). And hey, if you find it let me know. That particular gem is out of print."

"Some of the best, and some of the most famous, classics are on this lovely album. There are four pieces by Chopin alone, all of them distinguishable to anyone who has spent any time at all listening to classical music on the radio. Chopin's name is also recognized by most; a name like Szymanowski, probably less so. Yet he is also featured on the album, with two pieces, both haunting and beautiful, especially his Etude for Orchestra. There are presumably people who do not know that there is a tremendous amount of wondrous art that comes out of the beautiful country of Poland - paintings, music, film and literature; this album is a treat precisely because there are treasures on it that, unless you are a Polish classics aficionado, you might not have heard before. A great album for a very practical price."
