When James Plunky Branch first came to France, the audience fell into a contagious trance. This saxophonist has conducted Juju, Oneness of Juju and Plunky & Oneness, and recorded several albums with different bands but he had never performed in France until this concert. Cultured and politically engaged, Plunky has long studied African rhythms, evolving musically from be-bop to hip-hop and funk. An admirer of Pharoah Sanders, Maceo Parker and Fela, his music is a wise mix of styles, all of it tied up by a true spirituality. With his partners, Plunky puts a fire into the audience of the famous Parisian club New Morning; these releases immortalize the evening. As a bonus, the DVD contains a documentary on the life of this man actively involved in the fight for Civil Rights during the 1960s and in the protest against the War in Vietnam, a great traveler and an avid student of history and culture.
