Synopsis

Product Description
This is one of Plácido Domingo s most personal albums to date,
as he performs coplas, the traditional popular songs of Hispanic
origin with which he grew up.
Coplas express drama, profess love, impart humor, describe history
or just comment on everyday life. In Spain the genre had a boom in
the 1930s, when many composers of popular songs and light classical
music contributed to the tradition with art songs.
Domingo has made a personal selection of coplas he describes them
as mini operas and recorded them in Madrid with the Orquesta de la
Comunidad de Madrid under Miguel Roa. With splendid new arrangements,
this recording revives a beautiful, nostalgic genre.
Pasión Española will be DG s priority Hispanic project for 2008 the must-have
album for all lovers of Domingo s art as well as for Spanish and Latin-American
people all over the world.

CD Reviews

Memories, yes, great memories.
El Critico | Aventura, Florida | 10/07/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I must admit that I cried when listening to some of these "coplas", they were the songs of my mother and grandmother and they brought such great memories.

Although Mr. Domingo is a great singer, the songs do not sound as "nicely" as I remember them in the voices of great artists of the time such as Imperio Argentina, Conchita Piquer and later Los Chavales de Espana, Lola Flores and others, but I am dating myself!!

Nevertheless, I enjoyed this album inmensely.

"
A very peculiar interpretation.
Hector O. Nieves | Dorado, P. R. Puerto Rico | 09/17/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mr. Domingo is perhaps the best operatic tenor ever, but a beautiful voice is not enough. Repertoire, interpretative style, stage presence and durability, among others, are requisites to be in this category. Having said this, the selections of this album are very old and traditional pieces of Andalucian and Gypsy flamenco specially suited for their artistry. Nevertheless Mr. Domingo tackles them with grace and makes them sound very nice in his voice. This is another example of his greatness."
