CD Reviews

A breath of fresh air
Dan Grissom | Nacogdoches, TX | 01/19/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Although this is only an EP, it feels like a full album. It's just as ambitious and as cohesive as one would expect a full album to be. Sure it's only six songs, but every one of those six songs is almost worth the price of admission on their own. Seriously, this is some great music. And the other full length album by these guys is just as good. It's guys like this that really give me hope for the future of music, it's just a shame that the radio airwaves are so saturated with mindless crap that this band will probably never get the recognition it deserves.

If you are wondering what they sound like, well it's hard to explain, but I'll try. Imagine if Wilco somehow did a project with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Sigur Ros. Sounds crazy I know, but if you buy the album you'll understand. They great thing about Phosphorescent, however, is that they manage to sound like these other bands/musicians that I've mentioned, but nothing like them at the same time. They are able to sound completely original while still sounding familiar, which is a great thing. There is also a very unexpected, and very interesting cover of Willie Nelson's "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys," which is fantastic. This, to me, shows in just a few minutes that this band is aware of its past, yet more concerned about its future. I highly recommend this EP and their other album to anyone who likes interesting music."
