In fact, Phineas Newborn, Jr. had been playing professionally in and around Memphis since his teens. The word on the East coast streets was that he could play faster than just about anyone with an incredible command of the keyboard. It didn't take long before arrangements were made to have Phineas - - the name is pronounced "Fine - us" - - ushered into the recording studios for an Atlantic records debut album. Along for the ride was a solid rhythm section consisting of Oscar Pettiford on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Calvin Newborn, the brother on Phineas, comping on guitar. The intent of this recording was to introduce Phineas Newborn, Jr. to the world."Junior" didn't disappoint. This CD contains eight tracks of astonishing music. The album is a showcase for the young musical genius. You've heard "All The Things You Are" and "Afternoon In Paris" countless times by countless other performers.
