Synopsis

Album Description
Phillippe Saisse is a jazz piano master who has recorded, written and/or produced with such notables as The Rolling Stones, Kirk Whalum, Richard Elliott, Rick Braun, Warren Hill, Dave Koz, Paul Brown & Marc Antoine among others. A blend of smooth lyrical vibes with rock solid jazz-funk, At World's Edge goes much deeper and weaves together a rich melodic tapestry of progressive, impressionistic, and global threads. With guests: Angelique Kidjo, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, and Jeff Golub, this album plays easy on the ear but deep into the imagination.

CD Reviews

Saisse? Edge?
Leonard Johnson | Georgia | 03/11/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"On old maps, at the point beyond which laid the world's edge, it was written "Terra Incognita" (Unknown Land). Well, this album never veers away from the safe shores of smooth jazz enough to even get close to exploring new (and perhaps, dangerous!) territories of music.

I have followed Saisse as he takes different trajectories with his music (jazz/funk, contemporary, standards) and some of his excursions have set the bar pretty darn high (as anyone who has heard "Masques" or "Halfway 'Til Dawn" can testify). This album is more sedate than those, which is not to say that it doesn't have some jewels. "Monday Afternoon", "At World's Edge (Instrumental)", and "Through Tainted Glass" are given strength by his strong piano stylings and will be worthwhile additions to any smooth jazz station's playlist. "Assante Sana" is a strange fit on the album, but it has a style that may grow on you.

That being said, I'm just glad the man's back in the studios. I look forward to his next work."

"Unlike many fans of Philippe Saisse, I did NOT enjoy his last two efforts with the Philippe Saisse Trio. I am a fan of his earlier works and "At World's Edge" gets back to those roots. Loving it. Especially "Topanga Moon Dance" and "From Nowhere to Now Here"."
