Synopsis

Album Description
Philippe Hirschhorn studied at the Riga and the Leningrad conservatories and won First Prize in the International Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1967, in which Gidon Kremer came in third. (The jury included Oistrakh, Menuhin, Francescatti, Szigeti, Grumiaux, and Gingold!) He played concerts all over the world with the most prestigious orchestras conducted by, among others, Herbert von Karajan. He played frequently with Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky. Hirschhorn had to abandon his concert career because of poor health but continued as a violin professor in Brussels. He was probably one of the best violinists of the century; the rare recordings that exist of him are stupefying on both the technical and musical levels. Live recordings 1967-1977.
