Synopsis
Product Description There s no expiration date on a good song. Gifted singer/songwriter Phil Roy makes a bold but accurate statement when talking about the art of songwriting. And he should know; throughout a career spanning two decades, he has penned intimate, exquisitely crafted songs about the human condition that have caught the attention of fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. In reviewing Roy's 2003 performance at Joe s Pub, Stephen Holden of the New York Times wrote The music of Phil Roy accomplishes a delicate emotional surgery that countless troubadours have tried but few have been able to carry off. In the most direct language and without irony, [Roy] describes personal experiences of love, loss and spiritual revelation with a naked honesty untainted by narcissism. That delicate emotional surgery is ever-present on THE GREAT LONGING, Roy s third full-length release as a solo artist and his major label debut-at the age of 48 which will be released May 20 on Decca Records. The new album reflects his joy in capturing universal sentiments with honest words and inventive arrangements, and is joined on the album by a stellar supporting cast that includes vocalists Amos Lee ( Busy Thinking Bout Today ), Madeleine Peyroux ( Exceptionally Ordinary ), and rising Philly star Melody Gardot ( A Meditation... ). CD ReviewsIf you don't own this, you should. Mj Tomaszewski Flick | Pittsburgh, PA | 05/26/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "It is a rare instance when you can find a CD that doesn't have a bad song. It is a rarer instance when you can find an artist that doesn't have a bad song. This is how I feel about Phil Roy.
I have been a fan from years. I have seen him in person. I have always looked forward to hearing him on the radio. I have made others fans of his. This CD is no different. His characteristic voice. His use of a lyric. The transition between songs. It is the total package. Highlights: "Exceptionally Ordinary" and "A Deeper Meaning"." |
