CD Reviews

High Flying--What?

"Only diehard Phil Collins fans would be looking at this page, so I'll dedicate this review to you. The three tracks on here--as one might have already figured out--are: 1.) "Can't Stop Loving You"-- Album version of lead single off Collins' new record 'Testify'. Phil gives us a great treatment of an excellent cover song yet once again. Remember all his tributes? Everything from "A Groovy Kind Of Love", "The Time's Are-A-Changin'", to "You Can't Hurry Love", he's always been great at the covers, treating the songs as his own.2.)"High Flying Angel"-- Previously unreleased & really the only reason for buying the cd single 'Can't Stop Loving You'. I honestly believe this track to be quite better than some of the other material used & released on 'Testify'. I prefer it to maybe three or four of the tunes that were actually released on his latest LP, including "Driving Me Crazy", "Thru My Eyes", & "It's Never Too Late". In my opinion, it was a mistake not to have used "High Flying Angel" as an album track. Instead, some of the more "mediocre" songs were chosen as the final cuts for the 'Testify' track list.3 "Sussudio"-- Previously released on the live Collins Big Band cd, 'Hot Night In Paris". I'll assume that we have all attained this recording in some form or another YEARS ago. This song I could I have done without. A "Sussudio 2002" brand new version would have been highly appreciated rather than this, but oh well.Again, this cd single is for hardcore fanatics such as myself (& whoever may be reading this). I should also note that the second track sounds to be perhaps a bit more in the vein of a 'Both Sides' track than of a 'Testify' one. Cherrio!"
A superb song and a fair single content.

"Of course, Can't Stop Loving You is a superb song, so that's one good reason to buy this single, but why not buy the album instead? This single offers a fair bonus for the fans, giving the non album track High Flying Angel, which is, however, far below the other Testify songs in quality. It's rather like some of the B-side tracks from the Both Sides era (remember Another Time? No?), and it is rather uninspiring (no, it's not at all likee For A Friend :-( ), so I think it was wise of Phil to leave this off the album. The other extra track, however, is rather uninspiring, since this has already been released on the Big Band album. I had sorely hoped for some of the unreleased live recordings from the Dance Into The Light Tour (The Times They Are A-changing, River So Wide/Take Me Down/Find A Way To My Heart, The Same Moon or perhaps Do You Rember, One More Night or Take Me Home). Well well, that would certainly be something for the fans! So Phil, we're expecting a bit more from you with the Wake Up Call single!"
