Synopsis

The title Fire might suggest roiling textures or a conflagration of sound, but this volume of Peter Kater's four-disc Elements series is golden sunsets and hearthside caresses. Purely acoustic, Fire has a nostalgic aura. Paul McCandless's pennywhistles and Ludvig Girdland's violin lend it a Celtic flavor on tracks like "Eternal Sunshine," while on "The Way Home" that same fiddle takes on a tinge of Americana, framing McCandless's forlorn oboe and Kater's pensive piano. In fact, Kater sounds like he's writing words on a page, contemplating each note before he lets it drop. The entire disc has the intuitive feel of guided improvisations, like you might expect from highly-attuned jazz players, but with a greater concern for the ensemble sound than the individual solo. It's difficult to play music this introspective, and sometimes it feels painfully slow, but guided by a sense of melancholy and contemplation, Peter Kater and company pull it off. --John Diliberto

""Fire" is one of the four-part Elements Series by Peter Kater. Like "Water," "Fire" is completely acoustic. It features Kater on piano, Paul McCandless on various wind instruments, and Ludvig Girland on violin. Kater was wise to not embellish the music, as these are three consummate artists who work together seamlessly, creating a warm, inviting, and soothing hour of musical beauty. Like water, in "real life," fire can be dangerous, frightening, and destructive, but Kater and company have focused on the soothing and healing qualities of the elements. On this album, it is more about candlelight and cozy fires in the fireplace than a raging inferno. Some of the seven tracks are quiet and ambient while others are a bit more passionate, but there are no hard edges or turbulence. This music is about being gently transported to a place of peaceful serenity, and succeeds extraordinarily well. All four CDs in this series are gorgeous, and my favorites are "Water" and "Fire." Pour yourself a nice glass of wine and find a comfy spot to relax and enjoy "Fire.""

"Each song on this CD is beautiful. It's a quiet, contemplative compilation that provides superb ambiance for a romantic setting or simply a time to soothe yourself. I like to listen to Peter Kater's music when I engage in writing, which is often. The blend of piano and oboe is pleasing to the ear, and Kater's music enhances my own creative endeavors."
