Amazon.com Plagued by record company headaches, Peter Himmelman has released only one new collection of songs (a children's album called My Best Friend Is a Salamander) since 1992's Flown This Acid World threatened to explode his status as a cult songwriter of exceptional skill and insight. But this welcome album, by turns mature and typically playful, might yet do the trick. Though the jaunty pop opener "Eyeball" is tarted-up by "guest" producer/Nine Inch Nails percussionist Chris Vrenna's de rigueur late-'90s alt.production drag, it's Himmelman's bright melodies and often cutting lyrics that carry the day throughout. Comparisons may be odious, but when they're to Elvis Costello ("Time Just Flew," "Coming Apart at the Dreams"), Randy Newman ("Lifetime Too Late," the "hidden" bonus track "Angels over Brooklyn Skies"), or his own father-in-law, Bob Dylan ("7 Circles"), Himmelman merely seems to find himself among his rightful peers. Rife with rare melodic gifts and performances often achingly wrought from the songwriter's spirit, Love Thinketh No Evil is a richly textured collection of songs that contains nary a false moment. --Jerry McCulley Similar CDs

Kurtz | Almost Asbury Park | 10/27/1999 (2 out of 5 stars) "First of all, who is Jerry McCulley (the person who wrote the amazon review right above this) and where does he get his (mis)information? He states that this is Peter's first album of new songs (not counting "My Best Friend...")since 1992's "Flown This Acid World". Au contraire. Jerry seems to forget (as well as amazon, because they don't offer) "Skin", Peter's 1994 concept album, that, while not everyone's cup of tea, is a much stronger album than this. As a matter of fact, and I consider myself a strong Peter Himmelman fan, everything in his catalogue, with the exception of the "Salamander" album, is stronger than this. I was disappointed the first time I heard this, and I've yet to change my mind. See my review of "From Strength To Strength" to gauge my reaction to this man's music. This just plain leaves me cold and dead in the water. Perhaps these songs interpret well live, but they do nothing for me on record. Having met him on a number of occasions, I can attest that Peter Himmelman is a great guy, a wonderful songwriter, and a hoot to party with. And don't let anyone tell you his concerts are anything but parties. Unfortunately, LTNE is a step in the wrong direction,in my opinion." The best songwriter in America is at it again! S. That's not hype; it's simply the truth. Given the fact that he can write about "real" elements of life and human nature and have the same songs backed by a powerful array of melody is an incredible accomplishment. His musical style varies from song to song, yet his passion for truth and love is uncompromising. If you have yet to hear his music, don't wait any longer.
