A Pleasant Surprise

"It is rare that an actor can be a successful singer or at the least provide a very credible debut deserving critical acclaim. Despite stacked odds, actor Peter Gallagher proves himself to be a credible singer on his debut album, 7 DAYS IN MEMPHIS. Being a fan of the TV show, The O.C., I never expected Gallagher, who plays Sandy on the O.C. to release an album. Not only did Gallagher release an album, he released a very nice classicist, adult contemporary- blue eyed soul affair, and pulls it off very well.

From the opening track, "Still I Long for Your Kiss", you can tell that this isn't going to be your typical actor turned into singer affair. On this opening track, Gallagher delivers nearly the perfect vocal performance accompanied by the organ, electric guitars, and an "in the pocket" drum groove. Production within 7 DAYS IN MEMPHIS is clearly a high point of the album as Gallagher goes a la Al Green with blaring horns, strings, organ, keyboards, and electric guitars to support his lovely tenor.

For the most part, Gallagher provides electrifying performances on tracks such as "When Something is Wrong with My Baby", "Still Got the Blues", and "When You Move or Lose". My personal favorite track is "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby" where a production laced with piano, guitar, organ, guitar, and horns provide an arranger's masterpiece behind an incredibly soulful Gallagher. Gallagher as a vocalist falters only a few times throughout the album with minor pitch issues. For the most part, the rest of tracks are worth a listen to with the weakest material being "Every Time it Rains" and "A Song for You". While those don't quite live up to the stunning opening track "Still I Long for Your Kiss", or the moving "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby", they are still solid tracks for the most part.

Overall, I think Gallagher's incredibly strong debut will raise some eyebrows. This proves Gallagher to be a very versatile person just as the best actors/singers have proved such as Will Smith (rapper), Jamie Foxx (featured on two number one hits and releasing an album), and arguably such singers as Christina Milian or the popular Hilary Duff. 4 Stars.

"It is hard to believe Peter Gallagher can sing this well. Still I Long for your Kiss is a great slow dance soulful track; the band is definitely 5 stars. Gallagher does a creditable job of singing some Otis Redding and other soul singer tunes. While there is only one Otis, all 12 songs on this CD are well worth listening to. I think he does a better job with this than Michael Bolton did trying the same genre."
