"Peter Almqvist from Gothenbourg is yet to be discovered by the wide audience. For many years he had a guitar duo with Swedens most wellknown jazzguitarplayer Ulf Wakenius..today Ulf is the regular guitarist with Oscar Peterson.
Peter Almqvist is is quite another kind of player..he is not a "flashy" player but rather he treat every note carefully and puts it in it s right context..and still he has an enormous groove..quite similar to Jimmy Ponder..he "bounces" the same way and his Wes inspired chordal playing is also close to Ponder. Peter says that Wes and Kessel is some of his influences which also is very evident in his playing.Peter and his trio has toured with Art Farmer and on this particular recording the trio is joined by the legendary Blue Note pianist HORACE PARLAN..Parlan sounds as fresh on this album as he did on the album "Up at Mintons" w Stanley Turrentine & Grant Green from 1961.
This record swings....and this is due to trhe fantastic job by bassplayer Yashuito Mori and in particular drummer Raymond Karlsson..he swings his tail off here!!
If you like Wes/Burrell/Ponder/Benson/Green ..I bet you will love this record.
