Synopsis

Product Description
New York-based saxophonist/composer Pete Robbins joins Playscape Recordings roster with his second release as a leader, Waits & Measures. Recorded and mixed by Jamie Saft, Robbins' sophomore effort features his working sextet. "On this new recording," writes critic Mark F. Turner in the liner notes, "Robbins clearly has an acute understanding of jazz as an art form, but more importantly he is striving to create music that moves in new directions. The group has gelled into a tight unit, creating music based on the ebb and flow of spontaneous invention. Robbins has again impressed me with is abilities as a musician, a serious composer and an artist with a vision to create music that is progressive, yet always engaging."

CD Reviews

A New Force on the Jazz Scene
Grady Harp | Los Angeles, CA United States | 08/30/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Pete Robbins is an innovator in addition to being an immensely talented musician (alto sax and clarinet). On this CD WAITS & MEASURES Robbins, whose academic training at Boston's New England Conservatory and Tufts University is clearly evident in even the most minute ways of composition and execution, presents nine of his own compositions which he performs with a select ensemble - Sam Sadigursky on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Eliot Krimsky on keyboards, Mike Gamble on guitar, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Dan Weiss on drums. The ensemble effect result is amazing and seamless.

Robbins thoroughly understands the jazz genre but here he proves that in his own compositions he may be using the basics but is transforming the concept of jazz into a new medium. Not everyone hearing this album initially will find the compositions memorable, but with repeated listenings they become fascinating excursions that affect the mind as well as the soul.

Pete Robbins is a bright new star in his chosen field and we can only guess how fast he will rise in this field. Recommended for serious jazz lovers and for serious music lovers of all classifications! Grady Harp, August 06"
