CD Reviews

Simply great music

"Peppino's homage to his roots is a fine album, I believe his broadest recording to date. How wonderful to hear him find his voice, he sings on about half the songs on this album, all in native tongue. I think he underestimates his singing, it has a total honesty that is warm and genuine. The collection of songs is terrific, some classics from Ennio Morricone including the beautiful Gabriel's oboe from The Mission and The Good The Bad and The Ugly theme, truly a gem in the hands of a master guitarist like Peppino. Other Italian classics like O Solo Mio and Santa Lucia are given fine renditions, and Peppino's beautiful Ancora un Istante [One More Instant] from his earlier Venus Over Venice is updated with new vocal.

If all this sounds like a collection of old Italian classics that you've heard a hundered times, think again and do yourself a big favour, this is a wonderful album and Peppino brings these songs to life with exquisite guitar work, warm honest vocals, and a varying accompanyment of musicians including a maudlin piano accordian on a couple of tracks. Brilliant stuff"

""Pick me up!", that most typical and comforting dessert! Spaghetti al ragú. Vitello parmaggiano. Fegatini con polenta. Pizza quattro stagione ... and the musical accompaniments or equivalents: O sole mio! Santa Lucia! Peppino D'Agostino sings and plays both on this CD, along with a full menu of traditional Italian favorites as familiar as the menu of your neighborhood Italian family-style restaurant. But just as Risotto or Pasta Bolognese can be gustatory marvels when prepared by the right chef, these sentimental classics sparkle with new musical flavors as Peppino re-interprets them.

D'Agostino is essentially a "hot" guitarist, whose repertoire stretches with his own interests to include rock/pop, new age sounds, folk guitar styles, and at times Vivaldi. The guitar licks are the showiest part of this performance, but Peppino sings with a fresh innocence that suits the melodies and the words they convey. This 'tribute" CD of music from his native Italy is distinctly different from anything he's recorded previously. In other words, it's not the kind of music he usually plays, or the kind I usually listen to. But it's tastefully, sincerely, and skillfully what it is. Me piace molto, amico!"
