It's hard enough being a back up singer in yer man's collectives. But Pegi Young acquits herself well in both regards here. This isn't the greatest CD you'll ever hear, but Young is a solid writer who can string a melody together. Her voice is a bit reedy and a little flat, but that works with the country-folk-rock numbers she has penned. This isn't far away from HARVEST era music, and that seems to suit Young to the ground. It's certainly her strength. The musicians helping out are largely NY colleagues: Keith, Oldham, et al. Young himself adds a synthesized sitar to one track. Wisely Pegi elects not to cover Neil's tunes. She does tackle some superb numbers by Oldham and Will Jennings, and comes across as the genuine article. While she isn't threatening June Carter Cash, she is certainly better than Patty Scalfa, Courtney Love and a host of others, and miles beyond Linda and Yoko (although in fairness to Linda, she didn't want to be in the band)."
