A deeply moving recital

"This recital presents rarely performed music by a group of gifted composers who spent most of the 2nd World War incarcerated in the Theresienstadt forced-labour camp and, with one exception, died there or in Auschwitz or Furstengrusse. The circumstances under which the songs, poem (one track is a recitation) and piano pieces were written add to the poignancy, though the theme of dispossession, and longing for home and the freedom to enjoy the little things of life, is universal, and still very much part of the 21stC.

Holzmair, ably seconded by his pianist, gives an intense performance that probes the more sombre side of human experience, albeit shot through with shafts of light, and even sardonic humour. The CD makes no attempt to disguise the harsh reality, but, though harrowing, is never despairing."
