CD Reviews

The world's best unknown harp player

"Here it is, over 2mos since Heavy Rotation was released and I'm the first person to review it. Sad, but not surprising. A tour de force, for Paul, and blues in general. This Paul's best album since Paulzilla, I really don't know what else to say about Paul. He's a virtuouso on the harmonica, chromatic and diatonic. He does things that makes a grown blues-harp-man cry. He's just so far ahead of everyone else musically, and that's probably why his music is so unmarketable. He gets virtually no air-play, and it's a shame. Not only his playing great, but his songwriting is among the best in the business. His band is just as good. You can tell that they can play anything, not just blues, but jazz as well (hint, hint, Jazz album next Paul?).Please, please. Support Paul! He's just in another class and deserves to be heard. If you love harmonica playing and blues you owe it to yourself to hear him. This isn't just blues, it's so much more."
YOU- on the bicycle! You need this CD!

"July 29, 2003:

Paul Delay's latest is a showcase for both his talents, and those of his underappreciated band. The songwriting is superb, the rhythm section is top notch, Peter Damann's guitar playing is nothing short of perfect, and Paul is... Well, he's the best alive.

You owe it to yourself to check this out whether you are a die-hard blues fan or not.

Update, September 4, 2007

Paul passed away in March of this year, and I recently reviewed "the Last of the Best", the only live recording of the Paul Delay Band, which made me look back at my review of this album. My enthusiasm for this work hasn't faded, in fact some of the tracks have become all time favorites of mine.

This album is the best studio album from the Paul Delay Band, and it's now the last. Paul's lyrics alone are worth the price - consider the inventive harmonica work and Damann's best ever guitar licks freebies."

"Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. This is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I saw the band live in San Francisco at Biscuit's and Blues and am now hooked!!"
