CD Reviews

Minnesota blues
John Barelli | Gig Harbor, WA USA | 12/16/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Pat Donohue continues to disprove the notion that northern boys can't pick and can't play the blues. This album is so skillfully crafted that he makes it sound easy. Put it on, and it feels like an old friend just stopped by with his guitar to play you a few tunes and share a couple of beers.

For those that have already heard him play, then all I need to tell you is that this album is up to the same high standards as his others. You won't be disappointed.

For any that have never heard Pat Donohue, you're in for a treat. The only way it could get better is to be able to hear him live.

Some of the tunes are so much fun, it's easy to forget that you're listening to one of the world's best finger-picking guitar players, others are so good that it seems incredible that this isn't a New Orleans bluesman, but a northern boy from the great state of Minnesota.

The album is well balanced between blues, jazz, bluegrass and a few bits that defy classification. If artists that play around with some of the traditional forms bother you, then this album probably isn't for you, but if you simply want to listen to an incredible guitar player, you couldn't find a better choice."

"Be forewarned. If you're looking for his excellent guitar work, this CD is all vocals except for one short, simple piece."
