Paradigm Shift kicks into High Gear
C. Thomas Mallison Jr. | GREENVILLE, NC USA | 12/16/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This release is like a book of short stories. Each selection is different and independent of the others. You can listen all the way through and not get the feeling of listening to the same artist because of the different solists. There is a subtle funk in the playing.

This CD begins with SANADU. Wycliffe Gordon's, Trombone, adds a real touch of "soul" whenever he enters the session along with the muted trumpet of Marcus Printup.

YESTERDAYS offers some up tempo playing by Joe Locke, Vibes, with light and fast vamping on the B-3 by Gerry Youngman. Locke also steps up on BIG BROTHER with Wycliffe.

My personal favorite is SANABEL BREEZE. It features Wycliffe and Gary. It provides an opportunity stretch out with the Trombone and Organ. It has that Basie feel of SHINNY STOCKINGS. HALF WAY AROUND THE WORLD features Marcus Printup while Melvin Henderson gets in some Wes Montgomery licks on the guitar against the sounds of the B-3.

This release is loaded with talented players that share the leadership on the various slections. Bill Tibero, saxphone and Ted Poor on drums round out the group."
