Synopsis

While much is made of the larger instrument sounds of Puerto Rico, little has been done to expose the rootsy percussion and vocal tradition of the bomba and the plena. Paracumbé are one of those "national folkloric" groups that often blend colorful costumes with stilted performances, but this band is nothing of the sort. The bomba is a hard edged, percussion music made for accompanying a duo of male and female dancers. Plena is a song style with both African and European influences, made for singing and accompanied by accordions, thumb piano, cuatro, and guitars, with only light percussion. For a band that plays both styles, the results are remarkably exciting, alive, and free of any tourist pandering taint. --Louis Gibson

CD Reviews

Amazing recording!
Ramon Melendez | Anaheim, CA USA | 05/21/2000

"Sometimes the uneducated needs to be reminded that Puerto Rico has its own drum and its own style of voice and drum music. Wow! What a group! I can't stop saying good things about Paracumbe and about this recording. Bomba, like Cuban Rumba, is a family of rhythms, this CD presents mostly the style known as Bomba del Sur, the bomba style of southern Puerto Rico. Only the women sing in the southern style and you got to hear them! The voice work of Nelie Lebron, Rhenna Santiago and Sara Rosado is amazing. Mr. Dufrasne deserves a lot of credit for his arrangements, his own compositions and for his research on Bomba del Sur and of course for his playing. Is a joy to find a recording like this that keeps this tradition alive with such a high level of quality. Very good notes are included. This record is a classic."
Wonderful! Paracumbe is unique.

"This CD is a treasure! After reading a short review somewhere I picked it up and played it over and over. The drumming is not only superb but incorporates rhythmic styles and time combinations like I've never heard elsewhere with incredibly beautiful vocals. Every drummer should have this one."
