CD Reviews

Papa John was the Rock Father!
D. G. Luttrell | Colorado | 04/01/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I don't know if Papa John's back up band was weak, or he was just too

good? After decades of giggin' jazz clubs, and classy joints, he became

an overnight sensation when "Hot Tuna" "found" him. I'm glad they did,

don't get me wrong. But the man had a career before becoming an

overnight sensation. I mean from his "debut' on the "Hot Tuna" album

"Burgers", he caught my ears right away, believe me "Hot Tuna" needed

him more than he needed them. And from the following four albums he

built up much street credit with them crazy eyed white people, the

"Papa John Creach" album where he played with anybody and everybody

who is anybody in the music scene in San Francisco, his album "Filthy"

where he showed that funk/jazz/old standards and rock could live in the

same album cover, to "Playing my fiddle for you", where he rocked out a

little more, at the expense of the funk, and the CD were talking about

currently, "The Rock Father", and the album lives up to the billing,

very funk/rock fusion, from "Travlin' on" to the "Orange Blossom Special"

this disc was something special, I would not suggest this album for you

pale, effete, minimalist, eurothrash types, its realisim, warmth, and

in your ear soul/rock will give you heart palpatations. I really wanted

to give this disc a four, because of the weakness of "Midnight Sun" the

backing band, but Papa John Creach pulls it through with his astounding

musical presence and ability.
