CD Reviews

Anthology
Paul Magnussen | Campbell, CA USA | 08/27/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you want career-spanning anthology of Paco de Lucía, this looks better than most.

But something is wrong either with Amazon's track listing, or with the sound samples: Track 12 is given as "Entre dos aguas" (Paco's great hit), which is the Rumba from the album Fuente y caudal; but what plays is "Aires choqueros" (from the same album), which is a Fandango de Huelva.

If you really want "Entre dos aguas", then, you might do better with this. Or maybe not. Who knows?

As to the other tracks:

* "Zorongo gitano" is from the Lorca album (1965, with Ricardo Modrego on 2nd guitar)

* "La Malagueña" is from Recital de guitarra (1972, with just about everybody)

* "Punta Umbria", "Gitanos trianeros" & "Llanto a Cádiz" are from Fabulosa guitarra (1967)

* "Tomo y obligo" is from Hispanoamerica (1967, with Paco's brother Ramón on 2nd guitar)

* "Guajiras de Lucía", "Panaderos flamencos" & "El tempul" are from Fantasía flamenca (1969)

* "Taconeo gitano" is from Dos guitarras flamencas en stereo (1964, with Ricardo Modrego on 2nd guitar)

* "Plaza de San Juan" is from Fuente y caudal (1973)

* "Río Ancho" is from Almoraima (1976)

* "Palenque" & (unsurprisingly) "Solo quiero caminar" are from Solo quiero caminar (1981)

* "Gloria al Niño Ricardo" is from Siroco (1987)

* "Luzia" is, again unsurprisingly, from Luzia (1998)

(I would have given you links to them all, but there's a maximum of 10.)

The order is pretty much chronological (which is the way it should be), and it's nearly all pure Flamenco."
