Very Good Vanguard
Michael B. Richman | Portland, Maine USA | 05/07/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"After purchasing and enjoying a few of the recently reissued "2CD Masterpieces" from Vanguard Classics (Boult's Beethoven Symphony performances in particular -- see my reviews), I decided I would sample a few more titles from this series. This double disc features three of Tchaikovsky's greatest orchestral works -- Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6, and the Serenade for Strings op. 48. Disc one features the 5th with Pierre Monteux conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in a 1963 live stereo recording from Vienna. It is certainly the collection's centerpiece, yet as a performance it falls short of the conductor's legendary account with the Boston Symphony for RCA. Disc 2 begins with the "Pathetique," performed by Vladimir Golschmann leading the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and appearing on CD for the first time, and concludes with Carlo Pini and the Australian Chamber Orchestra's 1988 live recording of the Serenade. My reason for not awarding this set a fifth star largely has to do with the fact that another work could easily have been included on the first CD to provide more music (the Capriccio or Francesca perhaps as the 1812 and Romeo were included on Vol. 1). Also, these recordings while very good are by no means definitive renditions. In all though, an enjoyable Tchaikovsky collection at a very affordable price."
