CD Reviews

The most well known (...) Surfers side project.
Gunther Haagendazs | Up High in the Trees | 04/12/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is the most well known (...) Surfers Side project, and the reason for that is simply because of the fact that Johnny Depp was in the band and that it came out before ElectricLarryLand and on capital records. Those are the reasons pretty much. What we have here is something very interesting. Most people have glanced at this because of Depp but this is completely Gibby Haynes' (of (...) Surfers) project here. What makes up the album is a variety of songs from weird instrumentals, blues, comedy and the most usage of the Gibbytronix since the BHS album Hairway to Steven. The two covers are standouts with Daniel Johnston's I Save Cigarette Butts outdoing the under produced original and Abba's Dancing Queen being just a joke really. I think it was just meant for the listener to raise their eyebrow as they glance over the CD. I think it's catchy but everyone I've played it for says the original is better.

As for the rest of the music. It's hit or miss, but none of it is terrible. It's fun to see if one can make it throughout the 9 minute Instrumental of John Glenn (Mega Mix). However none of the music is as captivating as most Butthole Surfers Music, but its definitely something to own if your a (...) Surfers fanatic. This band p. only made one album, and do not expect them to make another as it is from 1995. it has been long out of print and you're more likely to get a copy of eBay for $20 give or take. These guys just wanted to get together and have some fun basically. Your much more likely to find them eating at a barbeque then playing at a concert or anything.

On the Japanese import and on a single, there is a bonus track titled Mumble. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing it, if anybody else had please post about it, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an instrumental or something. Well I hoped this helped, its not essential, unless you're a collector, but remember they made this for fun, so you should listen to this for fun as well.

Might be good if you like Tom Waits

"Might be good for Tom Waits fans. Not for me but it has potential."
Not Sure What To Make Of It

"To be frank, I only bought this CD because I was curious to see what type of music Johnny Depp would play. I don't know much about alternative music. I didn't hate the CD but I had a great deal of difficulty figuring out alot of the lyrics and I guess I am one of those people who wants to "understand" the lyrics. Some of the music I liked and some of it sounded exactly like what my grandchildren play on my keyboard and they are only 5 and 6. What do I know, maybe they should have their own CD too. But in the end, the big test is that I put 3 of the songs on my iPod, which is why I gave it 3 stars."
