CD ReviewsAn Especially Strong Debut boy_howdy | Northfield, MA United States | 12/11/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Representing the best of almost a decade of honing craft and paying dues in the Greater Boston coffeehouse scene, the gems on this first major album from up-and-coming singer songwriter P. J. Shapiro demonstrate the wry, intelligent lyrics and sparse, jagged style for which this artist (reportedly Geoff Bartley is a fan) is rapidly becoming known. There's a great contained energy in these pieces, which powerfully compliments the interplay of dark, autobiographical lyric and rough but gentle voice. Especially strong tracks include the surprisingly hushed title track, a bittersweet "Angry," and the growl of thunder in "My Town." Sparse production on this disk -- just guitar and voice -- creates a solid "live in studio" sound that really sets off the often surprisingly deep emotion of these cuts. You won't be disappointed!"
