""Overtures" brings together 7 pieces by 7 different composers. The overtures on this CD are as follows: "Light Cavalry," by Franz von Suppe; "Der Freischutz," by Carl Maria von Weber; "The Merry Wives of Windsor," by Otto Nicolai; "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg," by Richard Wagner; "The Gipsy Baron," by Johann Strauss Jr.; "Orphee aux Enfers," by Jacques Offenbach; and "The Bartered Bride," by Bedrich Smetana.Overall, this is a rich and diverse CD, full of excitement, playfulness, and gentleness. I especially loved the martial "Light Cavalry," with its stirring, heroic opening. "Merry Wives" is fun, and has a light, elegant touch. Wagner's "Meistersinger" makes me think that this composer has had a profound effect on classic Hollywood film scoring. And "Orpheus" has some truly lovely passages of ethereal beauty. This collection of overtures is really great."
