Music for buddhas ... .. . . . . . . .. . . .
jmcpherson14 | San Diego, CA USA | 01/14/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD is self-described as "playful celebration music
recorded live during meditation sessions at the Osho
International Commune in Poona. Instruments include sitar,
tabla, bells, saxophone, guitar, keyboards". The liner notes say "From the early 70s, when the contemporary
mystic Osho began addressing his teachings to the public, music
has played a vital part in the celebrations that took place in
his presence. Over the years, musicians from every country and
culture have come to the Osho Commune in Poona/India and created
a totally new sound in the presence of a living Buddha. It is
called Music from the World of Osho. Here a musical laboratory
was born. In the search for the soundless sound, an alchemical
experiment ahead of its time blends East and West and North and
South with the energy of the Enlightened One. Gifted musicians
from around the world who found creative inspiration in this
unique setting have integrated musical traditions with the fresh
breeze of Osho's vision. Pioneers in the New Age Music field
joined with classically trained artists, rock and jazz
instrumentalists and musicians from diverse folk traditions to
create a remarkable synthesis that stands in a category of its
own." Pictures inside show: Rupesh playing drums, Milarepa on guitar,
Joshua on sitar, Devakant on flute, and Miten smiling :-)
The recordings were actually made between 1987 and 1989. This music sounds interesting and unique in my experience,
kind of a "contemporary ancient" fusion, blending such things
as "muted excitement", "active laziness", "start slow and end
faster", "alert meditation", "slightly sad joy", "wholesome
indolence", etc. These thoughtful musicians play quite well and easily and
respectfully/appreciatively together. Many of these pieces have
catchy/haunting simple motifs played by flute or sitar, supported
and played-with by the others. Here are some notes I made on each track:
1 "mysterious" mood, 2 slower beautiful flute, 3 meditative
and aware of being in that special wondrous space at Poona,
4 pleasant Celtic-ish melody, 5 contemplative, 6 languid flute,
7 slow flute and sitar duet, 8 Chinese-ish flute faster pace,
9 atmospheric/ambient which picks up speed later as tabla kicks
in, 10 Japanese-ish flute & sitar Zen-quick, 11 bells motif. If you'd like to try some decent Indian New Age fusion with
innovative classical grounding, by all means pick up this one,
or one of the other Osho music CDs."Music is meaningful simply because
it rings bells in your heart." Osho"
