Synopsis

Album Description
2008 reissue of this soundtrack to the 1968 Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton film. The movie was a flop, it's true, but it's the rare and wonderfully atmospheric and dreamy score that John Barry composed that we're interested in here. Based on Tennessee Williams' stage play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore, Joseph Losey tried his best to direct Taylor and Burton but he came off the loser. Lavishly illustrated booklet with terrific notes by movie buff Kimberly Lindbergs. Harkit.

CD Reviews

JOHN BARRY MEETS THE BURTONS: BOOM!
Michael C. Smith | San Francisco, CA United States | 11/12/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As considered by most critics of the day "Boom" was panned as a disaster of a film. But in hindsight it is now being viewed as a cult classic. (See my review of the film for more information regarding that.)

Here we have a rare John Barry score that I thought would never see the light of day. Barry is best known for his early Bond scores and films like "The Lion In Winter". Scores that are bold and full blown and soaring. Here in "Boom:" he is lyrically whimsical and at the same time dramatic. The circus motif of the opening titles set the tone of everything being out of touch with reality and of another world, private, beyond normal and a little insane. And yet it is one of his most hauntingly gorgeous efforts for the movies.

Enchanting in a very 1960's way and for any Barry fan a must have.
