Ear Delicious

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Widor composed ten numbered organ symphonies in his lifetime, all five or more movements long, featuring some of the most spectactular organ writing ever. His organ symphonies are not along the lines of Saint-Saens' great Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony), which utilizes full symphony orchestra, Widor's symphonies are written only for Solo organ; of which Symphony 5's Tocatta is by far the most recorded.

This CD has 74 minutes of organ music all of which will make you heart race. The famous organ symphony No. 6 begins with a majestic chorale statement which keeps coming back after interludes of softer burbling, and ends with a grandiose march. The 3rd Symphony is more contemplative in comparison, with, perhaps, the exception of the middle march movement.

The Trois Nouvelles are each dedicated to an American scholar whom Widor admired. Each are extremely different from one another, representing the many ways Widor is inventive in his composition style.

David Patrick has dedicated his career to the performance of the French Romantic organ masters such as Maurice Durufle, Vierne, and as can be seen on this disk, Charles-Marie Widor. With a few exceptions of odd rhythmical choices, the performances on this disk are excellent. In addition, the sound quality is terrific; recorded in Coventry Cathedral, the sound is not swimmy or muddy at all, everything comes in clear and crisp. If you enjoy the grandeur of great organ music, check out this CD and other Widor and/or organ CD's featured on the ASV label. Highly recommended"
